Over the years I have said this to many of you… “The best protection for your horse back is a 100% Wool Saddle Pad with a channel down the spine to provide additional clearance and vent the heat and prevent spine rubs”.

Have you ever seen a hatter clean and reshape a Black Felt Cowboy Hat? He does it with Steam.  When we place a well fitted saddle on your horse’s back, a 100% Wool Felt Pad, and use that same pad on that same horse with the same saddle with-in 4 or 5 rides the horses’ body heat starts to mold that pad to a PERFECT fit.  If there is a place that is a bit tight OR if your horse is a bit asymmetrical then within a few rides this pad begins to condense at a faster rate then the rest of the pad does and soon it molds to a perfect shape. 
If you have a horse that is out of condition and you know that he will change shape as you put the miles on him now his pad can change with him with the same steam that the hatter uses only this time the steam machine is your horse. 

Cheaper wool felt pads on the market are made of needled felt which does not have the same properties and this pressed and woven wool felt and thus the pad cannot compress.

 Usually I recommend a thin pad for a horse that has a perfect fitting saddle. However, some horse's conformation requires a bit more help. For example, for a horse with an exposed back bone that needs more than 1/2 inch of channel I recommend our 5 Star Crest Ridge Pad with a channel down the entire length of the spine. Then some horse's may have one shoulder or wither side larger than the other. I like using this 5 Star wool pad because within a few rides, with the help of the horse's steam from sweat,  the tight side starts to condense while the other side remains the same to reduce pressure and eventually balance the load under the saddle.  As long as the pad is used on the same horse with the same saddle, a near perfect fit can be obtained after just a few rides.
